“What the human eye observes casually and incuriously, the eye of the camera notes with relentless fidelity.” – Berenice Abbott
Born and raised in New York City by Puerto Rican parents, the city life and ethnic culture helped me develop an artistic eye and passion for the arts. An art student for twenty years of my young life I learned the importance of composition and visually telling a story not only with a subject but expressing emotion with color as well. Graduated from Manhattan's Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts in 1990. My parents stressed the importance of work ethic, professionalism and being able to speak both English and Spanish or “Spanglish” as I calls it.
On October 10, 1992, I enlisted in the United States Navy. After a tour in the Persian Gulf during Desert Storm, I attended Photography School in Pensacola, Florida where I mastered both film photography and photo processing graduating top in my class. Upon completion, I continued on to Naval Air Crew and Survival Training to further prepare me as an Aerial Photographer with final orders to NAS Jacksonville Fleet Imaging Center Florida. I took on the responsibilities of event photographer, portrait studio, base photo lab manager, duty photographer (forensic) along with my aerial duties and any other photographic coverage requested by both military and civilian. Due to my professionalism, expertise and keen eye, I earned high praise from high ranking military officials and dignitaries in the Southeast. In doing so was considered to accompany and photograph Washington officials such as Newt Gingrich and Dick Cheney to name a few.
After 7+ years of service, was honorably discharged with disability from the military. Now a civilian and to support my family, I attended ITT Tech while on medical hold and graduated as valedictorian with an Associates of Science in Computer-Aided Drafting Technology. Worked as a Civil Engineering CAD Designer from 1998-2012.
With my Navy years behind me, in 2000 I moved to Columbia South Carolina where I embarked on combining both my artist background and photographic eye. After a couple of slow years, I was approached to photograph a couple of military and special events for the local Chamber of Commerce. My passion for photography was so apparent among Chamber Members that I was asked to become a member and provided coverage to all future events. With a camera always in hand, my reputation to capture the moment when called upon earned me the nickname “Paparazzi Chris” by all who know me. Since then I've has added weddings, family and corporate portraiture, sports photography, real estate photography (ground/aerial) and graphic design to my ever-growing portfolio. I am a proud member of Professional Photographers of America.
With almost 24 years of experience in photography my passion of being behind the camera hasn’t diminished.
